The castles of the Langhe and Roero are a prominent and distinctive feature of the landscape. Dominating the hillside villages of southern Piemonte, for centuries they have been part of the image and identity of each municipality and of the region as a whole.
Some are of extreme historical and artistic interest, examples of fine architecture, original furnishings and superior craftsmanship. For the local communities they are the symbols of their history, bearing witness to trends in architecture and art from the Middle Ages onwards.
Every year the castles of the Langhe and Roero attract tens of thousands of tourists, from Italy and abroad. They can therefore be of strategic importance for developing tourism and promoting the region.
The organisations responsible for promoting tourism, in partnership with Regione Piemonte (the Regional Council of Piemonte), aim to boost the potential of the region\'s castles as tourist attractions alongside the traditional food and wine products of the Langhe and Roero.
In recent years the local communities have realised the strategic nature of this resource. This is one of the main reasons that led to the establishment of the Comitato per la valorizzazione dei castelli delle Langhe e del Roero (Committee for the promotion of the castles of the Langhe and Roero).
The project stems from the desire of the Assessorati alla Cultura della Provincia di Cuneo (Cuneo Regional Office for the Promotion of Culture) and Regione Piemonte (the Regional Council of Piemonte) to pursue and develop a common promotion plan, starting in 2004, in order to prevent the adoption of diverse and incompatible approaches, convinced of the value of creating a single body to coordinate all the various activities.
The Comitato per la valorizzazione dei castelli delle Langhe e del Roero (Committee for the promotion of the castles of the Langhe and Roero) was founded in 2007 by the municipalities of Barolo, Benevello, Govone, Grinzane Cavour, Magliano Alfieri, Mango, Roddi, Serralunga d\'Alba and the "Turismo in Langa" (Tourism in the Langhe) association, with the support of Regione Piemonte (the Regional Council of Piemonte), with the following aims:
o enhance the region\'s cultural offering by taking an appropriate, modern approach to promote the historic, artistic and cultural heritage of the castles of the Langhe and Roero;
o qualify the existing tourism offering with activities and promotional campaigns to make the castles more appealing and enjoyable;
o create awareness among the general public and public authorities of the cultural value and historical heritage of the castles of the Langhe and Roero;
o create a coordinated and immediately recognisable image of the network of castles and publicise them in Italy and abroad:
o increase the number of visitors to each castle;
o create a network and system of the castles of the Langhe and Roero; at present this amounts to promotional activities but in future it will mean coordinating the various castles, as set out in the regional plan of priorities for the sector;
o coordinate the presentation of requests and issues raised by public authorities in the area where a castle is situated;
o create advantages to demonstrate to everyone the value and importance of the "network" and that this is more valuable than the sum of its single components.
The overall promotion plan envisages different forms of action. These have been defined on the basis of periodic regional marketing analyses and taking into account the requests for action and proposals put forward by the municipal authorities concerned.
